When the Movie's Over

There is a specific kind of grief that happens in the last ten minutes of a movie you did not want to end. You start bargaining with the runtime. You let the credits roll all the way through, music and all, because the moment you press stop the spell breaks and you have to go back.

Go back to what? To the thing that is harder than the movie. To the life that does not have a score underneath it and does not resolve in two hours and does not guarantee that the right people end up together or that the loss means something or that the last shot will be beautiful.

Movies is about that threshold. The doorway between the dark of the theater and the light outside, where everything is real again and real is messier than you remembered. We want the movie to keep going not because we are afraid of real life but because real life is harder than it looks and the movie, for a little while, made it look possible.

The Aether understands this longing. It has no objection to the escape. It only asks that you notice what you are escaping toward, because the stories you choose to live inside say something true about what you are looking for outside of them.

The credits roll. The lights come up. The real story starts.

It was always going to be harder than the movie. It was also always going to be yours.
